Capstone project for Software and Solution Architecture

Architect Mangrove's back-office modernisation

Mangrove's back office is one large application with one shared database. Buyers, store managers, finance and the Partner app team all change it, releases happen once a month, and a slow stock report has twice frozen goods receiving in the stores. Ken, the engineering manager, asks you to propose the target architecture, the migration path and the governance that keeps it on track, and to defend it in an architecture review. Start from the business drivers and quality-attribute scenarios, compare at least two styles honestly, decide which parts to extract first and who owns which data, plan the cloud setup and its monthly cost, and lay out a migration that keeps all 320 stores and the partner shops trading at every step.

What you hand in

  1. A list of business drivers, constraints and at least six quality-attribute scenarios with measures
  2. C4 context and container diagrams of the target, plus one component diagram
  3. Five ADRs, each with context, options, decision and consequences
  4. An integration and data-ownership map with event contracts
  5. A migration roadmap with steps, risks, rollback points and cost estimates

Check your work

Tick each item when your project meets it. Be strict: this is the rubric the reviewer uses.

  • Every major choice traces back to a named quality-attribute scenario or constraint
  • At least two real alternatives are compared per key decision, with honest trade-offs and costs
  • Each piece of data has one owning service or module, and integration uses explicit, versioned contracts
  • The migration keeps the business running at every step, with rollback points and a plan for the shared database
  • The cloud plan covers reliability, security and a monthly cost estimate with its assumptions
  • C4 diagrams are readable on their own: titles, legends, labelled relationships and one level of detail each
  • Governance is concrete: who reviews what, which fitness functions run in CI, and when ADRs are revisited
