What is happening

Alert: the app API was down for 20 seconds. When it came back, traffic jumped to five times normal and it fell over again.

Every phone that saw an error retries as soon as the API answers. Most of what they ask for is the same home screen and offers.

Fix it so the API survives the herd after the next restart.
